Your master plan:
What you can expect in the Master Sport and Exercise Science

Sport performance and health are influenced by a variety of factors. Therefore, as a master’s student, you will acquire in-depth knowledge not only in the core areas of sport and exercise science, such as physiology and biomechanics, but also develop a comprehensive understanding of related fields including sport psychology, nutrition and neuroscience.

The master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science takes four semesters including an internship and concludes with a master’s thesis. The focus of the course is on the assessment and optimisation of physical performance and health.

You will learn how to use state-of-the-art performance diagnostics for the acquisition of physiological data, how to analyse and interpret test results and how to translate your findings into training plans and programmes for different populations. In addition, you will further develop your academic skills by critically examining the sports science research literature and designing, conducting and evaluating your own research projects.

Course of study

1st year

You will develop an in-depth understanding of advanced testing and training methods in the core subjects and related disciplines of sport and exercise science including physiology, sports psychology, motor control and motor learning. You will gain more specialised expertise in the diagnostics of performance and health aspects and will be able to design and control assessment-based training programmes for athletes and patients. You will also identify different levels of psychological performance determinants for physical activity and exercise behaviours allowing you to implement strategies that optimise sport and exercise performance. You will also deepen your academic knowledge: You will learn how to design and carry out research projects and to analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data with the help of statistical software.

2nd year

You will apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired so far during a 450-hour internship in a vocational field of your choice. In addition, transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving skills and analytical thinking are further developed. You will also take the next step in your technical field: you will gain a profound understanding of how nutrition affects health and performance. On this basis, you will develop diet plans for special (clinical) populations, sport teams and individual athletes. Finally, you will pursue and defend your own research project with your master’s thesis, in which you will demonstrate your acquired knowledge.

Studying the Master in Sport and Exercise Science at LUNEX has been a great preparation for my PhD in the London South Bank University since all courses were hold in small classes which enabled me to ask more precise questions. Furthermore, it allowed me to get in closer contact with the professors. The fact that all classes are taught in English will help me even more in preparing adequately for my future.

Jil, Sport & Exercise Science Graduate

My internship at the Rehazenter in Luxembourg was a great opportunity to work with a highly knowledgeable and professional team of sport therapists, which taught me a great deal about adapted physical activity and rehabilitation. I gained valuable work experience, which prepared me for the life beyond university, and it grew my confidence in myself and in my abilities.

Sanja, Sport and Exercise Science Graduate

In the fast lane:
Career & perspectives

As a master’s graduate in Sport and Exercise Science you will play professionally in the “Champions League” of a growing and dynamic industry. Your job opportunities are extremely versatile – on both a European and international level. Whether you start in the sports business, conduct performance assessments for professional athletes or embark on a career in research, your extensive newly gained expertise and professional skills will point your career in only one direction and that is up!

Opportunities for success

With an internationally recognised master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science, you will be a highly desired specialist in various areas of sport, fitness and health. Depending on personal career interests, sport and exercise scientists work as professional coaches, therapists, consultants, researchers or they work in management positions. Is your dream to become a sports teacher at a secondary school? This is also possible: as a graduate of the Master in Sport and Exercise Science, you meet the criteria to participate in the Luxembourgish selection procedure for the teaching profession "Concours de recrutement pour le professorat de l’enseignement secondaire" (Concours) or to obtain the "certificat d'aptitude au professorat d'éducation physique et sportive" (CAPEPS) required in France. Potential employers are:

  • Sport clubs and associations
  • Health associations and institutions
  • Hospitals, clinics, therapy centres
  • Public authorities and health insurers
  • Universities, schools, further education centres and research institutions
  • Schools for talented athletes and football academies
  • Sport and fitness industry
  • Sports goods and training gear manufacturers
  • Personal training agencies

As a result of demographic change, increasing health awareness among the population and the professionalisation of sport, the demand for qualified sports scientists in the health care system, competitive sports and research is particularly high. Your ability to develop solutions to improve quality of life through sport and exercise and to investigate strategies to optimise performance will make you a sought-after specialist, now and in the future. Your higher academic qualification is also your ticket to a higher salary and a wider scope of employment opportunities.

Only those who are one step ahead of the competition will remain successful in the long run. As a graduate of the master's degree program in Sport and Exercise Science, you have an excellent basis for specifically deepening and broadening your your knowledge in more specialised areas. You might even consider a doctorate to embark on a career in research or complete an additional course to gain sport specific coaching qualifications. These and many more are possible:

  • Gaining a coaching qualification with sport associations and specialised institutes (e.g. L'Ecole nationale de l'éducation physique et des sports in Luxembourg (ENEPS), Trainerakademie Köln in Germany)
  • Certified qualification as a sports therapist
  • Certified Exercise Practitioner (e.g. British Association of Sport and Exercise Science)
  • Certified (clinical) exercise physiologist (e.g. American College of Sports Medicine)
