Physical activity needs academic oversight

Prof. Axel Urhausen (PhD), President of LUNEX University and the Head of the Department of Sports and Preventive Medicine at the Hospital Center of Luxembourg (CHL), is a higly motivated and recognized researcher as well as a long- standing sports medicine specialist. He is a member of several committes connected to professional sport like the luxembourgish and german national anti doping agencies and head of medical staff at COSL (Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois). In an interview he told us about his visions and goals as President of LUNEX University.

LUNEX:

Mr. Urhausen, what is so special about the location of the university – Luxembourg?”

Prof. Axel Urhausen (PhD):

“We are an international university in a very international and open-minded country with a high quality of life. 46% of the residents in Luxembourg do not have the Luxembourgish nationality. It´s like a European microcosm. “

LUNEX:

“But the campus isn´t in Luxembourg City next to all the other international companies as one would have guessed. Why Differdange?”

Prof. Axel Urhausen (PhD):

“The location is unique – the campus has exceptional sport and traffic facilities in the very dynamic, fastest growing and ambitious small town of Differdange, which is by the way the 3rd biggest city of Luxembourg, in between regenerated former steelworks and Mother Nature. It is situated only 10 minutes from the large emerging scientific, academic  and cultural center of Esch-Belval and has an easy access to the city of Luxembourg, which is only 35 minutes by train. This is a distance similar to the one between locations still within bigger cities. ”

LUNEX:

“Ok so you are convinced of the location in Luxembourg, but this is an international University. Which chances do you see for LUNEX University internationally, especially in the academic context?”

Prof. Axel Urhausen (PhD):

“There are only very few universities with such a clear focus on sport, movement and health. Located in the middle of Europe and being small and flexible, we are an interesting partner for multiple academic cooperations. In fact we already have several exciting international projects and partners, so we are not starting from zero.  And last but not least, each of the involved academic heads brings his/her own experience and broad network which will help us convincing our national and international environment of the seriousness of our institution.”

LUNEX :

“You sound very excited yourself. What were the reasons you agreed to support this project and finally sign as the president of LUNEX University?”

Prof. Axel Urhausen (PhD):

“Nowadays physical activity is too important to let it without serious academic oversight. It was high time for Luxembourg to be represented on the international academic map within the fields of sport and health. In the field of the academic education in physiotherapy, this project offers the unique opportunity to fill the gap resulting from the almost closed admission for non-residents at the high-level university studies in Belgium. As an international university with interesting geographical location, we are able to set high quality standards for teaching and research as well as a very close and personal mentoring – this has always been of special importance to me when dealing with higher education, so I am more than happy to support this project in its starting phase and on the long-term.”

LUNEX:

“And what are your personal goals connected to LUNEX University?”

Prof. Axel Urhausen (PhD):

“It is very exciting to pull together with an team of specialists coming from several countries and different background to provide sport, in all its aspects, meaning professional sports, sports for all ages, health-related sports and sports for disabled, with a profound scientific environment. It is my desire also as a sports medicine specialist, that our work as a university, as an educational institution, helps improving the understanding and appreciation of physical activity and sport in prevention, rehabilitation and all other health related topics. So, this university also represents an important missing link of the “integrated sports concept” elaborated by the National Olympic Committee  and which in the near future should be implemented in collaboration with the political institutions.”

LUNEX:

“Thank you very much for the interview, Mr. Urhausen.”
