Mathieu Winand is a Professor of Sport Management and Head of Department of International Sport Management at LUNEX International University of Health, Exercise and Sports in Luxembourg. He is also the Chair of the Exam Board at LUNEX, overseeing the assessment and examination processes of all taught programmes.
Before joining LUNEX in 2017, he worked at the University of Stirling (UK) where he held the post of Programme Director for the MSc in Sport Management. Before moving to Stirling in 2012, Mathieu was Postdoctoral Researcher at KU Leuven (Belgium), and Research fellow at the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2009 on key determinants leading to high performing sport organisations.
Mathieu’s academic expertise are in sport governance, performance management and innovation in sport. His research examines performance management and organisational innovativeness of sport organisations, with a particular focus on sport federations. He also has interests in anti-doping education, processes of digitalization and how innovation can be used to support active living.
Mathieu has published in numerous peer-reviewed international journals and has co-edited the first research handbook on sport governance in 2019. Mathieu is Deputy Editor of Sport, Business and Management and is on the editorial board of Managing Sport and Leisure. He is Past Chair of the Strategic Interest Group ‘Managing Sport’ at European Academy of Management (EURAM) and has contributed to the international research group on Sport Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS). Mathieu is also the Director of MEMOS in French which is an Executive Masters in Sport Organisation Management supported by the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Solidarity.
