EGEAN project:
Reduce lumbopelvic pain with ExerGaming

9th of November 2023 | @ LUNEX

Pregnancy-related lumbopelvic pain (pain around the back and pelvis) is among the most common complaints in the pregnant population. Prevalence during pregnancy varies between 20 % to 50% while 25% will continue to experience pain one year postnatally. Symptoms typically begin between the first trimester, at labor or postnatally.

Pregnant women with lumbopelvic pain:

  • report moderate to severe pain intensity on the lower back, hips, pelvis, or thighs
  • have difficulties in daily activities such as walking, standing, getting out of the chair, and climbing stairs.
  • have reduced work ability and a higher risk of sick leave in late pregnancy

Physical activity and exercises in different formats throughout pregnancy have been associated with reduced back and pelvic pain symptoms during pregnancy and postnatally.

After the explanation by the instructor, it became a bit easier to play the games. I felt that it did something for my muscles after I used the corrected exercises.

EGEAN participant

Exergaming can be entertaining and engaging, improving participation and involvement. Such training executed via a sensorised gym ball represents a perfect approach for home exercise, improving the daily exercise intake and reducing the need to reach gym classes, which could be difficult during pregnancy.

The main goal of the EGEAN (ExerGaming in prEgnANcy) project is to promote and transfer the scientific knowledge of exergaming to pregnant women to manage LPP.

During the workshops, participants will learn about the physiological changes and the benefits of physical activity during Pregnancy practice exercises on the gym balls following a walking and balance assessment by a member of the AGEAN team.
